AMHERST, N.Y. (WIVB) - The charity screening of a film directed by a Buffalo native will benefit Roswell Park Cancer Institute.
Hollywood director Steven Bernstein visited Roswell on Monday. His new film, "Decoding Annie Parker," stars Helen Hunt and tells the true story of two women touched by hereditary breast cancer and the discovery of the BRCA1 breast cancer gene.
Bernstein says Roswell's reputation stuck with him even after he left for Hollywood.
"What we're doing with the film is kind of unique. Most films have a commercial release. Our film is going to have a very big commercial release, fortunately. People saw it and they liked it and we're doing a big rollout of the film next year. But I asked my financial partners if they would give me a small altruistic window where I could take the film around the country in support of charities and places like Roswell Park and they gave me permission. They told me it wouldn't work but they gave me permission," Bernstein said.
"Decoding Annie Parker" will be shown Thursday night at 6 p.m. at the Dipson Amherst Theater at 3500 Main Street. Click here for information on purchasing tickets.
So far, Bernstein says these special screenings have raised a half-million dollars for charitable organizations.
